The Fine Print

The Issue: High Demand for Basic Infant Necessities

With many families in Michigan facing economic difficulties, the demand for basic infant-care necessities continues to grow. Volunteers for Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan's Wee Help program assemble newborn necessities, such as receiving blankets, onesies, diapers, and hand-knitted hats, into layette kits that are provided to low-income women who are preparing to leave local hospitals.

Due to increased demand last year, the program had to cut the number of items it gave away, providing mothers with only one sleeper and onesie rather than two of each. This year, the program plans to serve up to 10 more hospitals.

The Campaign: Donating Infant-Care Kits to Mothers in Need

If this Grassroots campaign raises $540, then Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan can provide infant-layette kits to 40 mothers in need. The kits—which include a receiving blanket, onesie, bib, bottle, pacifier, sleeper, hand-knitted hat, and diapers—are delivered to women at 19 area hospitals through the Wee Help program. Each additional $10 raised will be used to help provide more kits (a $13.50 value each) to low-income mothers.

Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan

Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan aims to improve the quality of life for underserved individuals across the state through philanthropic programs. These programs include Link to Creative Teaching, which provides funding for special classroom projects, and Assault Survivor Kits, which distributes toiletries and new clothing to survivors of abuse or sexual assault whose personal items have been retained as evidence. Additionally, Wee Help supplies low-income mothers with infant-layette kits. Since 1994, the organization has distributed more than 3,150 kits to hospitals and birthing facilities throughout Michigan.

To supplement donations, corporate grants, and annual fundraising events, volunteers raise money for these programs by selling new and gently used items at the group's resale shop, the ReSale Connection.
