The Fine Print

The Issue: Dishware Needed for Community Kitchen

The winter of 2011 brought record-breaking snowfall to Anchorage, leaving people experiencing homelessness in freezing weather conditions. Bean’s Café provides a warm day shelter and hot meals for these low-income residents. In 2011 alone it served more than 225,000 hot meals, and the organization continues to see its client numbers grow.

The Campaign: Feeding Clients at Community Kitchen

If this Grassroots campaign raises $380, matched by the Denali Alaskan Federal Credit Union to become $760, then Bean’s Café can purchase 150 bowls and 150 spoons in order to maximize its efficiency in providing hot meals each day. Each additional $10 donation will provide an additional four bowls and four spoons to the café.

All donations will be matched up to a $500 total by Denali Alaskan Federal Credit Union.

Bean’s Café

Based in and supported by the community since 1979, Bean’s Café welcomes community members into its center to partake in a hot meal and enjoy respite from cold-weather conditions. The café serves hot breakfast and lunch 365 days a year to those experiencing homelessness, low-income elderly residents, and seasonally unemployed community members. On the busiest days, the staff of volunteers serves almost 800 free meals. The organization's Children’s Lunchbox program extends its meal services to low-income youth at sites throughout the Anchorage area.

In addition to meals, the center also provides assistance and referrals for clients seeking employment, housing, rehabilitation services, and educational opportunities, as well as long-term assistance for veterans and those with disabilities.
