The Issue: Low Graduation Rate in Denver Schools

The graduation rate for Denver Public Schools' class of 2005 was 58.6%, well below the 70.6% national average from the same year, according to the 2009 Cities in Crisis report by America’s Promise Alliance. This low graduation rate correlates with unemployment, poor health, and participation in crime, which a successful academic career and positive personal goals can help to prevent.

The Campaign: Sponsoring Youth on Wilderness Expedition

If this Grassroots campaign raises $500, then Big City Mountaineers can sponsor one underserved youth aged 13–18 on a weeklong wilderness expedition in the Colorado mountains alongside adult mentors. Each additional $500 raised will sponsor another youth's participation in the wilderness expedition. This covers training for mentors—each of whom is paired with one participant—transportation, and provisions, including food, handbooks, medical supplies, and satellite phones. On the expedition, youth engage in backcountry hiking, team-building exercises, reflection activities, and a summit climb. The trips help cultivate relationships among teens, their peers, and adult mentors, promoting self-awareness and personal responsibility and improving communication skills.

Big City Mountaineers

Big City Mountaineers helps underserved urban youth develop critical life skills through weeklong wilderness expeditions led by adult mentors. More than 1,000 youth per year have participated in the backpacking or canoeing expeditions since founder Jim Kern organized the first hiking trip in Montana more than two decades ago. On the trip, teenagers can develop a trusting, one-on-one relationship with their mentors and learn how to act with integrity, self-confidence, and responsibility. Big City Mountaineers also partners with volunteer climbers from Summit for Someone, who scale challenging North American peaks to raise money for youth in the program.
