In a Nutshell

Donations help fund a week of healthful snacks such as string cheese and apples for 100 kids in a program that encourages good health habits

The Fine Print

The Issue: Prevalence of Poor Diets Among Youth

Most young people in the United States do not eat the recommended 2.5–6.5 cups of fruits and vegetables and 2–3 ounces of whole grains every day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For youth aged 2–18, 40% of their daily caloric intake comes from added sugars and solid fats in foods such as soda, pizza, and grain- and dairy-based desserts. Diets poor in nutrition can increase the risk of obesity, heart disease, and certain cancers.

The Campaign: Providing Healthful Snacks to At-Risk Youth

If this Grassroots campaign raises $500, then Boys & Girls Club of Cape Girardeau can fund one week of healthful afterschool snacks for 100 at-risk youth in its Healthy Habits program. Each additional $5 raised will fund another day's worth of snacks for five kids. Healthy Habits participants learn how to make smart food choices, consume appropriate portion sizes, and maintain a high level of physical fitness. Five afternoons a week, they participate in homework time, leadership-development activities, and arts and sports programming. To fuel their daily exercises, the kids receive healthful snacks with two different items, such as string cheese and apples.

Boys & Girls Club of Cape Girardeau

Boys & Girls Club of Cape Girardeau provides children with programming that encourages them to participate in the democratic process and become the future leaders of the world. Club programs develop leadership potential and target community-based activities to help participants learn and grow. Through working at bake sales, volunteering on service days, and attending zoo field trips, young participants can gain a connection with and respect for their community, enhancing their communication skills and self-esteem. The organization also works with youth to establish strong education and career goals, teach them about financial success, and improve their academic abilities through tutoring and cognitively challenging games.

The Groupon Guide to: Status Symbols

There's no point in being insanely rich if nobody else knows it. Boast about your wealth silently with one of these status-signifying items:

Car: A showy car doesn't have to be the fastest car money can buy, it just needs a trunk that's made of glass and large enough to store dozens of exotic, nearly extinct birds.

Watch: Expensive watches trump diamond rings as the most popular jewelry item of the super rich because the vast majority of wealthy people earned their fortune by losing all of their fingers in a fax machine and then getting sympathy money from coworkers.

Lawn: Wealthy people use only the most nutrient-rich and expensive fertilizer on the market—a mixture of damp soil and tenderloin steak.

Bread: Bread itself isn't expensive at all, but when you use a loaf of french bread as a cane, you'll look like an eccentric millionaire.

How many calories are there in a standard walking cane?
