The Issue: Lack of Preparation for the Start of School

According to a MDRC study of ninth graders in Chicago Public Schools (CPS), a student's chance of graduating in four years drops from 87% to 63% after he or she misses four days of school. Five more absences correlate with another drop of more than 20%. Chicago Public Schools distributes school supplies and raises awareness of school start dates to reduce absences and promote successful and timely graduation.

The Campaign: Distributing School Supplies to Students

For each $11 donation to this Grassroots campaign, Chicago Public Schools will distribute a Kit for Kids school-supplies pack to one student from a low-income family. Each $18 donation will provide both a Kit for Kids school-supplies pack and a backpack for one student from a low-income family. Each kit, designed for three different age groups, includes 30 items, such as spiral notebooks, pencils, rulers, and scissors from name brands including Staples, Acme, and Georgia-Pacific. The kits contain enough school supplies to last the entire year and come in a corrugated box that doubles as a storage container.

In addition to equipping students, Chicago Public Schools aims to raise awareness about the upcoming school start dates through this campaign.

The third largest school district in the Unites States, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) operates more than 675 individual schools serving more than 400,000 students every year. It reaches 18% of all the youth attending public schools in the state and serves students from a variety of backgrounds, 87% of whom come from low-income families. CPS aims to provide students with a comprehensive array of math, science, language, and history classes to prepare them for future success. In addition to classroom learning, CPS emphasizes out-of-school initiatives including Keep Kids Learning summer activities and Chicago Book Clubs.
