In a Nutshell

Donations help fund materials and instructor fees for youth to participate in a creative drum circle at a Free Art Day

The Fine Print

The Issue: Arts for Youth Expression

For children who are homeless or living in foster care and have few creative outlets, the arts can be a bridge to communication, teaching them how to express strong emotions such as anger and anxiety without resorting to violence. Music especially allows children to channel their emotions while simultaneously helping them build confidence, self-esteem, and healthy relationships.

The Campaign: Fostering Youth Expression Through Music

For every $6 this Grassroots campaign raises, Free Arts for Abused Children can sponsor one child's participation in a drum circle at the organization's Free Arts Day program. The first 16 donations—with an anonymous donor matching donations up to $100—will fund drum-circle participation for two children. Each additional $6 raised will fund drum-circle participation for one child. After 50 donations, additional donations will go toward purchasing materials and covering instructors' fees for another Free Arts Day event.

During the Free Arts Day, roughly 50 youth aged 2–18 will learn to play complex rhythms with professional musicians in a drum circle. With authentic percussion instruments, they can find their own beat and then combine it with those of other participants to create a larger rhythm.

All donations will be matched up to $100 total by an anonymous donor. You can follow the progress of this and other Grassroots campaigns at the Groupon Grassroots website.

Free Arts for Abused Children

Carolyn Sargent used art to escape the isolation of hearing loss as a child. Art therapist Elda Unger discovered the power of the arts to help emotionally heal abused children. Together they founded Free Arts for Abused Children, which promotes artistic expression for children who are homeless, have been abused, or are living in foster care. Free Arts maintains four programs, each designed to engage youth in creative self-expression and provide an outlet for strong emotions and troubling experiences. Long-term lessons with role models help youth learn from trustworthy adults; art days empower students to connect with peers and express themselves through new mediums; family art projects encourage interaction within the household; and arts and crafts sessions help distract youth waiting on proceedings at local courthouses.

The Groupon Guide to: Breaking Tension

Many of life’s situations will thrust you into a moment of tension, be it an interpersonal conflict, an awkward silence, or an indeterminate stare from an animal that may or may not eat human flesh. Break these common moments of tension:

Situation: While on a casual baseball-park outing with a coworker, the two of you pop up on the “Will-You-Marry-Me” JumboTron cam.
Break the Tension: “Looks like you were made for me! By which I mean, biologically speaking, I essentially see you as furniture.” (Close with a firm handshake)

Situation: As an adult, you walk in on your father applying clown makeup for a gig at a local birthday party.
Break the Tension: “I respect you, but I don’t want to be you.” (Close with a firm handshake)

Situation: You are stuck on an elevator with a former romantic partner who you unceremoniously dumped.
Break the Tension: “I know I’m the last person you want to be here with right now, and we have a history, but there is a prophecy that a child conceived between floors shall, in life, know no walls. We should at least briefly consider the merits of taking this moment alone together to bear this modern God-King.” (No matter their response, close with a firm handshake)

What secret powers will a baby conceived on an elevator possess?
