The Issue: Breast Cancer in the United States
Among US women in 2011, estimates range from more than 230,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer being diagnosed to nearly 40,000 deaths from breast cancer, according to American Cancer Society data. And while breast cancer among men is rare, the same data estimates that there will be more than 2,000 new cases among men this year.
The Campaign: Building Gardens for People with Cancer
If this Grassroots campaign raises $750, then Hope in Bloom can build one 9' x 12' healing garden for a woman or man undergoing treatment for breast cancer. These gardens serve as therapeutic sanctuaries; past recipients have reported that their gardens helped reduce their stress and anxiety and boost their resolve to face treatment regimens. Each additional $750 raised will build a healing garden for another person undergoing breast-cancer treatment.
Hope in Bloom's volunteers design and install indoor and outdoor gardens. There are currently 250 people on the waiting list for a garden. All gardens incorporate color, texture, fragrance, and sound, with elements such as birdbaths, colorful houseplants, and small water features. After the gardens are installed, Hope in Bloom provides recipients with detailed plans for future upkeep and helps tend outdoor gardens for the first season.
Meanwhile, Massachusetts' high school students turned their love of photography and desire to help breast cancer patients into photo note cards. On weekends, the students sell the cards at local stores and community events on behalf of Hope in Bloom. To show thanks for supporting Hope in Bloom, the organization will send one of the images that caught the students' attention to those that donate to this campaign. After donating, the instructions on the voucher will explain how to receive the note card.

Hope in Bloom
Roberta Dehman Hershon founded Hope in Bloom after her lifelong friend and fellow gardener died of breast cancer in 2005. The organization designs and installs indoor and outdoor gardens at the homes of Massachusetts residents who are undergoing treatment for breast cancer. With gardens tailored to each individual's living space and lifestyle, they serve as tranquil sanctuaries and have helped improve the quality of life for women and men with breast cancer and their families during what is often a stressful time.
