The Issue: High Rates of Food Insecurity in Florida

In Florida, the 2010 household food-insecurity rate was 16.1%, according to data cited by Feeding America, making it one of nine states with significantly higher food-insecurity rates than the national average from 2008 to 2010.

The Campaign: Hosting a Food-Packing Event for Kids

If this Grassroots campaign raises $500, then Kids Against Hunger-Central Florida can host a food-packing event that includes an educational presentation about hunger for 30 children. Donations up to $500 will be matched by an anonymous donor. During the event, kids package food for underserved children in their school district, offering participating youth a rare chance to take action against hunger in their own communities. The meals are a special blend of white rice, fortified soy, and dehydrated vegetables that is a source of complete nutrition. Each additional $500 raised will be used to host another food-packing event for kids to help their peers who are in need.

Kids Against Hunger-Central Florida

As one of more than 95 offices across the country, Kids Against Hunger-Central Florida works toward the umbrella organization's mission of ending hunger by packaging and shipping nutritious meals to hungry and malnourished children around the world and in the United States. To ensure children receive complete nutrition, the food packages, which require only six cups of boiling water to make a meal, include white rice, fortified soy, and a blend of dehydrated vegetables with 21 vitamins and minerals. The meals also were designed to be acceptable to the wide diversity of tastes and cultures around the world. To date, Kids Against Hunger has provided more than 162 million meals for children and their families in more than 60 countries.
