The Issue: Microchips Help Shelters Identify Lost Dogs

More than 80,000 homeless and abandoned dogs and cats were euthanized in area shelters during 2004, according to the Houston Chronicle. When wandering and missing pets cannot be identified, they too become subject to this shelter procedure. To stop accidental loss, small microchips provide permanent ID tags, making it easier to identify owners. The Huffington Post reported that a study conducted by an Ohio State University dean showed shelters locating owners of microchipped pets in three out of four cases.

The Campaign: Implant Microchips in Adoptable Dogs

If this Grassroots campaign raises $400, then Lucky Dog Rescue, Inc. can implant identification microchips in 40 dogs transitioning to adoptive homes. Lucky Dog Rescue inserts a microchip the size of a grain of rice below the skin at the base of the neck, which shelters and vets can read with a universal scanner. Each microchip permanently hosts the adoptive owner’s contact information as well as Lucky Dog Rescue’s contact information. Each additional $10 raised will fund another microchip for a dog.

Lucky Dog Rescue, Inc.

Lucky Dog Rescue, Inc. saves dogs from the streets and provides vet care, foster care, and adoptive placement for homeless and abandoned dogs. Since its inception, Lucky Dog Rescue has found foster homes for more than 475 dogs. Each day, volunteer coordinators focus on matching dogs from BARC, the city shelter, with the most compatible families to ensure they live in long-term loving households. In preparation, the team vets each animal for health issues; provides vaccinations, heartworm treatments, and spaying or neutering; and implants a microchip with the shelter’s and new owners’ contact information. Professional dog trainers also work on the dogs' socialization skills in advance of placement.
