In a Nutshell

Donations help distribute toolkits to women who complete home-repair workshops to boost their self-sufficiency and employment opportunities

The Fine Print

The Issue: Lack of Opportunities for Many Women

According to UN Women, "women are more likely than men to be poor and at risk of hunger because of the systematic discrimination they face in education, health care, employment and control of assets." Providing women with the same academic and practical training as men can improve both their self-sufficiency and the resources and skills they bring to their households.

The Campaign: Teaching Home Repair to Local Women

If this Grassroots campaign raises $350, then Mothers Rebuilding Atlanta can distribute basic home-repair toolkits to seven local mothers who complete home-repair workshops as part of an on-the-job training course. Each additional $50 raised will fund a toolkit for another local woman. With their own tools and the knowledge to use them, women can make necessary improvements to their homes or find stable employment in the construction or maintenance field.

You can follow the progress of this and other Grassroots campaigns at the Groupon Grassroots website.

Mothers Rebuilding Atlanta

Sisters Tina Newson Troup and Cheree Newson Pace originally founded Mothers Rebuilding Atlanta in 1998 to help women and heads of families become economically self-sufficient. The all-female, African American-run organization facilitates life-skills training and job-skills training in traditionally male-dominated fields, such as the building trades, to broaden women's opportunities for success. Programs reach out to mothers, youth aged 13–23, and senior women to establish a strong base of self-empowerment and to protect against predatory contractors. Partnering with Neighborhood Works and Lena G Creative Design Inc., Mothers Rebuilding Atlanta hosts on-the-job training, job placement, and retention programs to increase women's ability to acquire and maintain stable employment while improving their homes and lives.

The Groupon Guide to: Oxymorons

Oxymorons are words or phrases that appear to be self-contradictory, useful for describing esoteric concepts and introducing children to irony so that you can start being more sarcastic to their faces. Learn to use the five most popular oxymora with these simple explanations:

Jumbo Shrimp: Shrimp are best known for being tiny and second-best known for having weird faces.

Civil War: War is actually decidedly uncivil and is marked, at its most mildest, by angry yelling.

Deafening Silence: Silence is defined as “the absence of noise.” This oxymoron was most likely invented by a poet with a brain disorder that was also responsible for his gift with words. When this happens it is a medical oxymoron.

"Helpful" Tech Support: This one is just a sarcastic joke for all you computer heads out there!

Shark Attack: It is always a shark defend, for it is you who is in their home.

Are all shark attacks actually shark defends?
