In a Nutshell

Donations help protect 30 dogs from heartworm disease with a month's worth of preventative heartworm medication

The Fine Print

The Issue: Heartworm Disease and Prevention

Although dogs can be successfully treated for heartworm disease, a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by parasitic worms in the lungs and heart, that treatment is complicated and expensive, according to a report from the American Heartworm Society. Heartworm prevention, on the other hand, is safe, easy, and effective, and typically only requires a monthly pill that costs between $5 and $10 per month, depending on the size of the dog and brand of the pill. Many heartworm pills also protect dogs against other gastrointestinal worms such as roundworm and tapeworm.

The Campaign: Protecting Rescued Dogs from Heartworm

If this Grassroots campaign raises $300, then North Carolina Schnauzer Rescue can provide a month’s worth of preventative heartworm medication for 30 dogs. Each additional $10 raised will be used to protect another dog from heartworm with a month's worth of preventative medication.

In addition to purchasing heartworm pills, North Carolina Schnauzer Rescue is hosting a heartworm awareness talk at SchnOctoberFest at Umstead Park in Cary on Saturday, October 6. During the event, a vet will explain heartworm disease, preventative measures, and the dangers and costs that result when dogs contract heartworm. The organization also hopes to distribute samples of heartworm pills to encourage pet owners to protect their dogs.

North Carolina Schnauzer Rescue

North Carolina Schnauzer Rescue's group of volunteers rescues and fosters 50–60 purebred miniature schnauzers each year, caring for them until they can connect the pets with permanent, loving homes. All of the adoptable dogs are fostered with the organization’s members and volunteers across North Carolina, so they can live in a loving home environment while they await adoption. Along with foster care and adoption services, the group helps raise awareness about schnauzer-specific and general canine health issues, such as heartworm disease.
