In a Nutshell

Donations help to fund an outdoor-exploration and camping trip for underserved youth from the United Indians Youth Home

The Fine Print

The Issue: Outdoor Opportunities for Underserved Youth

Many residents of the United Indians Youth Home, which serves youth who are homeless, have spent their lives in survival mode, dealing with inadequate education and unstable home environments. Spending time in the mountains can help them connect with nature and their peers and become more aware of their surroundings and themselves.

The Campaign: Sending Youth on Wilderness Trip

If this Grassroots campaign raises $750, then Peak 7 Adventures can take three underserved youth from the United Indians Youth Home on a five-day, four-night Ascent camping trip in the North Cascades. Each additional $250 raised will fund the transportation, food, lodging, and gear for another young person to participate in the excursion. Peak 7 Adventures aims to raise a total of $2,000 to take eight youth on the trip.

During the five-day Ascent program, youth backpack through the wilderness, climbing peaks, hiking, and rappelling down cliffs with provided equipment. Out in the wild, they have the opportunity to build self-confidence, acquire teamwork skills, and aim for new accomplishments. Besides serving as positive and responsible role models, safety-trained guides double as mentors and lead group-reflection time. This helps leaders from United Indians Youth Home to connect and engage with the youth both on the trip and afterward.

Peak 7 Adventures

Peak 7 Adventures aims to help youth realize their mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional potential through outdoor adventures that remove them from their comfort zones and let them experience nature. Working with local schools, community centers, at-risk homes, and foster homes, Peak 7 Adventures exposes underserved youth to engaging trips and tours. It provides all the necessary transportation, lodging, food, and gear for each participant and employs guides certified in first aid and CPR. In the wilderness, underserved youth and youth who have experienced homelessness can take risks, build friendships, and develop self-confidence. The trips explore the natural environs of the Pacific Northwest through a variety of activities including rafting, kayaking, hiking, and camping.

The Groupon Guide to: Creative Ways to Quit

Jobs are for work-loving stiffs who worship the gods of the nine-to-five clock. Throw off the shackles of gainful employment with these creative ways to end your job:

  • If you work at a place with a counter, hop over it and pretend to be a customer. When you get to the front of the line, order the I Quit! sandwich/movie ticket/bank account.

  • Send your boss an email telling him or her to meet you in the break room. When he or she shows up, be sawing the head off of an effigy you made of your work self.

  • Leave a voicemail on the phone of each of your coworkers giving them a really personal compliment. They'll know that you're being too familiar for someone who could still be considered a colleague.

  • If you work somewhere that has customers, hold them close and tell them you'll miss them. Tell them the things that have been in your heart this whole time that you couldn't express because of the unspoken boundaries between worker and customer. Let them know that though they will not see ever you in the future, you will live on in their brains like a bad brain fungus.

  • If you're a famous movie actor, just sprinkle the letters from the words "I quit" throughout the words of the dialogue in your movie.

How can I break free from being gainfully employed?
