In a Nutshell

Donations fund materials and labor for a local artist to build a puppet for the upcoming musical production of Anthropomorphic

The Fine Print

The Issue: New Musical on Social Acceptance

Anthropomorphic is a new musical that parallels the definition of anthropomorphism with the imposition of social standards, by using puppets that represent human-like insects and animals. A full orchestra and combined cast of human and puppet actors will explore the idea of imposing social standards on others. The story takes place between the moment of a gunshot and the main character’s acceptance of his own death and recognition that he is worthy of love.

The Campaign: Constructing a Puppet for the Musical

If this Grassroots campaign raises $280, then Puppetry Arts can build a puppet for its fall show, Anthropomorphic. Each additional $271 raised will fund the materials and labor to build another puppet. Artists from the LGBT community will build the puppets and perform the play in public workshops. Anthropomorphic aims to broaden the public’s access to musical theater, explore issues that local teens face on a daily basis, and reach out to LGBT audiences with special invitations for LGBT youth.

Puppetry Arts

Puppetry Arts organizes creative-arts programming that combines the art of puppetry with cultural exploration. Puppetry Arts reaches out to a variety of audiences with its community and educational programs, youth-empowerment activities, and professional theater program. In recent years, it has fueled new musical productions including Anthropomorphic, which examines the imposition of social standards on youth, and expanded its creative scope by incorporating video and animatronic puppets into its repertoire. Puppetry Arts goes into schools to help improve literacy and oral-language skills through puppetry and mask activities, as well as a youth-empowerment program that teaches young people how to express themselves artistically. The organization also provides professional theater, which aims to help emerging artists reach out to new audiences with thoughtful material.

The Groupon Guide to: Living with a Secret

Rarely does a soul get off this planet without seeing or doing a truly terrible thing. Keep it to yourself with these helpful secret-concealing tips:

  • Talk loudly and constantly about everything except the hidden shame that gnaws at your insides like a thousand tiny, chittering bear traps.
  • Distract yourself with activities and spectacles, all the while never addressing the private nightmare that coils around your heart, ever tightening like a boa constrictor suffocating its prey.
  • Try meditation and yoga to silence the warped and twisted version of your own voice that howls behind your eardrums, begging, pleading at every moment to be released by the decency and dignity of confession.
  • Get a pet. Tell them everything. Make sure it is a pet that no one will think twice about if you keep it forever in a cage, like a bird or a gecko. You're trapped in this together now.
  • Consult a doctor about having your mouth sealed over with a cool American-flag sticker—no one questions a patriot.

Why are more and more people having their mouths sealed shut?
