In a Nutshell

Donations help fund lumber, supplies, and landscaping materials for a Build-a-Bench-a-thon project to add accessible seating to a garden

The Fine Print

The Issue: Social Activities for Youth with Disabilities

Young people with disabilities often have limited opportunities for work and social interaction after graduating from high school. Programs such as The Tavon Center's day program can support them and their families as they connect with the local community, gain new skills, immerse themselves in nature, and make friends.

The Campaign: Building Accessible Seating in a Garden

If this Grassroots campaign raises $1,120, then The Tavon Center can fund construction costs and materials such as lumber, nails, and tools for its Build a Bench-a-thon event. Each additional $10 raised will go toward funding the event's landscaping costs, including gravel, plants, and compost. All funds raised past $1,500 will go toward funding scholarships for young adults with disabilities to attend The Tavon Center's program.

The Tavon Center is partnering with the Pomegranate Center and Foster the Future to put on a one-day Build a Bench-a-thon. The event will help beautify the facility's gardens and transform them into a relaxing space with accessible seating so that the program's clients can connect with nature and socialize.

You can follow the progress of this and other Grassroots campaigns at the Groupon Grassroots website.

The Tavon Center

The Tavon Center eases the transition from high school to adulthood for young people with disabilities by providing respite, care, social activities, and vocational-skill development in a specialized day program. The 5-acre center focuses in large part on horticultural activities such as planting in the gardens that stretch across 2,000 square feet and the greenhouse that grows everything from zinnias to artichokes. Clients can also tend to animals, such as goats, chickens, and rabbits, which roam the grounds. Every summer, the staff sells the center's produce and goods at farmers' markets to give clients a sense of pride and accomplishment while raising awareness about the disabilities. In addition to gathering eggs, baking, and painting artworks, the young adults in the program can also develop a network of friends and receive individualized care from The Tavon Center’s staff.

The Groupon Guide to: Breaking Tension

Many of life’s situations will thrust you into a moment of tension, be it an interpersonal conflict, an awkward silence, or an indeterminate stare from an animal that may or may not eat human flesh. Break these common moments of tension:

Situation: While on a casual baseball-park outing with a coworker, the two of you pop up on the “Will-You-Marry-Me” JumboTron cam.
Break the Tension: “Looks like you were made for me! By which I mean, biologically speaking, I essentially see you as furniture.” (Close with a firm handshake)

Situation: As an adult, you walk in on your father applying clown makeup for a gig at a local birthday party.
Break the Tension: “I respect you, but I don’t want to be you.” (Close with a firm handshake)

Situation: You are stuck on an elevator with a former romantic partner who you unceremoniously dumped.
Break the Tension: “I know I’m the last person you want to be here with right now, and we have a history, but there is a prophecy that a child conceived between floors shall, in life, know no walls. We should at least briefly consider the merits of taking this moment alone together to bear this modern God-King.” (No matter their response, close with a firm handshake)

What secret powers will a baby conceived on an elevator possess?
