In a Nutshell

Donations help cover the costs of having an onsite registered nurse at summer camp for individuals with disabilities

The Fine Print

The Issue: Safety at Special Needs Summer Camp

The Arc of San Diego's summer camps serve children, teens, and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities, including campers ranging in age from 5–68 years old. Approximately 90% of these campers take at least one prescribed medication regularly, with some taking as many as 14 different medications throughout the day. However, due to recent cuts in outside funding, the camp budget is extremely limited. The camp needs help funding a nurse to ensure safety and proper distribution of medication; without a nurse, a large number of campers will not be able to attend.

The Campaign: Hiring a Nurse for Special-Needs Camp

If this Grassroots campaign raises $750, then The Arc of San Diego can hire an onsite registered nurse to be available during one five-day summer-camp session for children, teens, and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Along with administering medication to the campers, the camp nurse will also assist with feeding tubes, catheters, and tracheotomy care on a daily basis. Each additional $10 donation will help purchase pool equipment or cover transportation costs for the campers.

The Arc of San Diego's summer resident camps for children, teens, and adults, held at the local San Diego Mountains, provide opportunities for individuals with disabilities to socialize with their peers and participate in sports that they might not otherwise be able to engage in, such as swimming and hiking. They also provide traditional camp activities such as arts and crafts, talent shows, and jewelry and soap making. The Arc of San Diego anticipates approximately 120 campers this summer, and with the help of this Grassroots campaign, it plans to redirect its funding to provide more scholarships for prospective campers who cannot afford camp costs.

You can follow the progress of this and other Grassroots campaigns at the Groupon Grassroots website.

The Groupon Guide to: Playing Marbles

Marbles is a game believed to involve drawing a chalk circle and populating it with collectible glass marbles of varying color and size. Since the last person who actually knew how to play "marbles" passed away in 1956, modern game theoreticians can only speculate about the rules:

  • Draw a circle of chalk on the ground.
  • One player adds some, but not all, of their marbles.
  • Another player adds a portion of their marbles.
  • The players shake hands to agree that "marbles" is about to be played.
  • Marbles are rolled (flicked?) at one another to result in some marbles entering the circle, while others, through gentle collision, are pushed out.
  • A dog with an eye patch looks on warily, his loyalties unknown.
  • A play or move results in one player getting to keep all the marbles, hence the still relevant expression "This one is for all the marbles."
  • The players once again shake hands and return to their Victorian boys' academy, shipyard, or World War I trench, although one player's pockets, with every footstep, now clatter with the reminder that he has robbed the other player of the entirety of his worldly possessions.
  • The half-blind dog sets off alongside the nearest set of train tracks, disappearing in a cloud of sun-bleached dust.

Can you strike it big playing the highly lucrative game of marbles?
