The Issue: Prevalence of Gun Violence

In the United States in 2009, firearms were involved in the deaths of 554 people by accidental discharge, nearly 19,000 by suicide, and more than 11,000 by homicide, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Gun homicide is a pressing public-health concern among youth and young adults in California. In a survey by the Violence Policy Center, of the 794 homicides of youth aged 10–24 recorded in 2009 with an identifiable murder weapon, 76% of them involved handguns.

The Campaign: Training Survivors in Advocacy

If this Grassroots campaign raises $510, then Women Against Gun Violence (WAGV) can fund advocacy training for three individuals who have experienced gun violence, preparing them to speak on behalf of the WAGV Speakers Bureau. Each additional $170 will fund an advocacy-training course for another prospective speaker. The Speakers Bureau trains survivors and those who have lost loved ones to gun violence to give talks to local residents and advocate against legislation that reduces restrictions on gun access.

Women Against Gun Violence

Women Against Gun Violence was founded during a national seminar on guns and gun violence, which brought together women's organizations in recognition of their historic leadership roles on community issues. Today, WAGV aims to prevent gun violence across the country by educating communities about the consequences of violence and advocating for legislation that promotes public health. WAGV's outreach programs aim to engage all citizens, from school children to adult members of the community and politicians. Its programming includes the Keepin' Them Safe program, which teaches parents how to implement safety precautions for guns in homes through role-playing activities, and the GunsSuck initiative, which combats ads that depict and glamorize gun violence, particularly those that are close to schools.
