The Issue: Low-Income Youth and Internships

In 2010, nearly one in four youth were living in poverty in California, according to statistics from the Public Policy Institute of California. Such conditions may cause young people to look for part-time work over academic and leadership training programs in order to provide financial help to their families, missing vital opportunities to develop their social, academic, and job-readiness skills.

The Campaign: Supporting Low-Income Youth in Leadership Programs

If this Grassroots campaign raises $400, then Youth Leadership Institute can provide a work stipend for two youths during a leadership program. The stipend allows each youth to continue to make an income while developing valuable skills. Donations will be matched up to $2,000 by Rose Lavandero, a member of the Youth Leadership Institute board of directors. Each additional $200 raised, with matching donations, can provide a stipend for another young person.

Youth Leadership Institute

For more than 20 years the Youth Leadership Institute has been training youth through leadership programs that focus on integrating participants in positive community-development campaigns. The staff engages young people in assessing their community’s social issues. Then, participants are given the resources and training to initiate change through programs and campaigns. During training sessions, youth learn skills in areas such as research writing, public speaking, and teamwork. The organization’s community-based programs reach out to communities in Fresno, Marin, San Marino, and San Francisco Counties, partnering with other local organizations to address local issues.

Each year, Youth Leadership Institute trains around 1,300 middle- and high-school students, and more than 70% of the participants are from low-income families. Participants often report improved skills in research, writing, teamwork, and civic engagement.
