In a Nutshell

Donations help fund a trip to The Tech Museum for youth who donated 1,500 hours of their time over the summer

The Fine Print

The Issue: Summer Opportunities for Youth in Watsonville

The Santa Cruz Volunteer Center established the Watsonville Junior Volunteers program to engage young people in enriching activities such as community service, educational field trips, and college-preparedness workshops.

The Campaign: Funding Educational Field Trip for Volunteers

If this Grassroots campaign raises $500, then YouthServe can send 25 youths on a field trip to The Tech Museum to reward them for participating in a six-week volunteer program. Each additional $500 raised will fund a similar field trip for 25 more young volunteers in the next program. Any funds raised more than $1,000 will go toward distributing T-shirts to the volunteers.

As part of the Watsonville Junior Volunteers program, youth serve 12 hours per week over a period of six weeks from June through August. During the program, they contribute 1,500 hours of their time at local nonprofit agencies that address a variety of social issues, including hunger and homelessness, child development, the arts, and animal welfare. Volunteers also attend three educational workshops on job readiness and civic engagement.

You can follow the progress of this and other Grassroots campaigns at the Groupon Grassroots website.

YouthServe

YouthServe is a program of the Santa Cruz Volunteer Center that aims to engage young people aged 11–18 in their community through a variety of social and service programs, such as tutoring children and working at a local animal shelter. YouthServe also trains college students to act as mentors for younger peers. In addition to facilitating the formation of social networks, these activities aim to develop decision-making and leadership skills and a sense of civic stewardship.

The Groupon Guide to: Oxymorons

Oxymorons are words or phrases that appear to be self-contradictory, useful for describing esoteric concepts and introducing children to irony so that you can start being more sarcastic to their faces. Learn to use the five most popular oxymora with these simple explanations:

Jumbo Shrimp: Shrimp are best known for being tiny and second-best known for having weird faces.

Civil War: War is actually decidedly uncivil and is marked, at its most mildest, by angry yelling.

Deafening Silence: Silence is defined as “the absence of noise.” This oxymoron was most likely invented by a poet with a brain disorder that was also responsible for his gift with words. When this happens it is a medical oxymoron.

"Helpful" Tech Support: This one is just a sarcastic joke for all you computer heads out there!

Shark Attack: It is always a shark defend, for it is you who is in their home.

Are all shark attacks actually shark defends?
