According to the Kids Count Data Center, 174,000 Minnesota children were living in poverty in 2009. The families of these kids often can’t afford to give them birthday presents due to their straitened means. Cheerful Givers helps create joyful memories for families living in poverty or experiencing homelessness by preparing and distributing birthday gift bags for young children.
Cheerful Givers supports recognizing and celebrating birthdays as a way of bringing cheer and promoting self worth. Distributed to parents at food shelves and shelters, the gift bags can provide families with a bonding moment and boost recipients‘ self-esteem. Each goodie bag contains a bounty of small toys and treats including balls, cards, a kaleidoscope, whistles, crayons, and candy. In 2010, Cheerful Givers brightened birthdays for 52,227 children with donated gift bags.
