More than 11,000 children in Arizona are living in foster care, and though the state provides these children with basic necessities such as food, clothing, and medical care, individual foster families must pay for the children to participate in fun activities such as sports or music lessons. Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation (AFFCF) funds educational, recreational, and social activities for children in foster care, and since 1984, the foundation has granted more than $3 million to 15,000 children.
Last year, AFFCF funded nearly $14,000 in awards so 107 children in foster care could participate in sports such as basketball, soccer, and Little League. More than half of children are placed in foster care because they've been neglected, and 33 percent have been abused. Playing sports allows them to make positive connections with adults, improve their self-esteem and health, and enjoy a sense of camaraderie with other children.
