Negative stereotypes about cultural groups perpetuate social inequality, and with classrooms and the workforce becoming increasingly diverse, cross-cultural skills are essential tools to help students succeed in the education system and beyond. Hostelling International–Austin's Cultural Kitchen program teaches youth about an array of countries and cultures with the goal of developing their enthusiasm for learning about new cultures and creating thoughtful, open-minded world citizens.
The Cultural Kitchen program provides an opportunity for middle- and high-school students in youth-group organizations to learn about a new country, hosteling, and cultural norms. The two-part educational outreach program includes a cultural and service-learning component plus an overnight trip to the Austin youth hostel. Students first research a selected country and participate in activities promoting cultural awareness. Then they select recipes and create a meal plan representative of their chosen countries and prepare a presentation to share with other hostel guests on the night of their stay. While at the hostel, students prep, cook, and serve their international dishes for hostel guests and staff, giving students an opportunity to interact with people from across the globe, share their new knowledge, and, ideally, gain respect for a diverse cross-section of people and cultures. Fees for the program include food costs, curricular materials, and lodging expenses. Hostelling International–Austin hopes to offer the program to organizations that serve underserved youth but don't have the necessary budget for this type of educational program and overnight trip.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to help HostelIing International–A host a cross-cultural learning experience for one youth group from an underserved community. If G-Team members raise $330, two groups of 10 students can participate in the Cultural Kitchen program at the Austin youth hostel due to a matching donation by two anonymous donors and Strub Residential. Every additional $330 raised will fund another two youth groups' participation in the Cultural Kitchen Program. Two anonymous donors and Strub Residential together will match up to $990.
Unlike traditional Groupon deals, G-Team campaigns typically don't offer you a "discount" or "savings." So "buyer" beware—when you click "Buy" to donate your time or money to a worthwhile G-Team cause, the only discount you may receive is 100% off free, priceless karma. Read more about G-Team.
