According to data from the National Cancer Institute, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetimes, and approximately 25 percent of women in Florida have never had a mammogram, according to a report by the Florida Department of Health. The Jennie Yoon Buchanan M.D. Breast Cancer Fund aims to prevent the spread of breast cancer by supplementing the cost of mammograms and breast-health services for uninsured women.
During a mammogram, low-dose x-rays penetrate beneath the skin to search for abnormalities in breast tissue. Mammograms can detect breast cancer several years before physical symptoms develop, forewarning patients so they can begin treatment immediately to more effectively combat the disease. With today's campaign, the Jennie Yoon Buchanan M.D. Breast Cancer Fund aims to provide free mammograms to at least 10 uninsured and low-income women, who may not otherwise be able to afford the procedure. Women who qualify for assistance are also eligible to receive care from the Florida Hospital group throughout any necessary subsequent treatment.
