The Fine Print

MedShare partners with international health-care organizations to redistribute surplus medical supplies from developed nations to underserved populations facing critical shortages of these supplies. The organization assembles medical-supply boxes containing materials ranging from basic items such as syringes, sterile gloves, and patient gowns to more specialized equipment including kits for infant deliveries, biopsies, and surgeries. These items are recycled or donated from large-scale medical suppliers and physicians' offices, sorted at one of MedShare's facilities, and then packed by the organization's volunteers. G-Team members who donate to today's campaign may contact MedShare to schedule tours of its local facility and to volunteer to help pack boxes of medical supplies destined for Nepal.

Working with Human Development and Community Services (HDCS), a nongovernmental Nepalese organization, MedShare plans to deliver a 40-foot-long shipping container of medical supplies and equipment to HDCS's hospital in Dadeldhura, a district in Far-Western Nepal. The residents of Far-Western Nepal, particularly women and children, often face medical hardships that go untreated by trained professionals, due in large part to a lack of resources. In the region, 100 out of 10,000 children are unable to survive until their fifth birthdays, and 75 percent of pregnant women deliver their babies without the assistance of skilled attendants. MedShare's 12,000-pound shipment will help outfit and stock the hospital's three new operating rooms.

The MedShare general fund will match all donations.
