When financially constrained Detroit Public Schools cut after-school programs and field trips, students lose opportunities to make real-world connections to academic subjects. As part of their work with The Detroit Partnership, student volunteers from the University of Michigan hope to provide Detroit Public Schools students with a hands-on science experience through a field trip to the Detroit Science Center.
The Detroit Partnership, a University of Michigan student-run service-learning organization, coordinates with schools in Brightmoor and Southwest Detroit to provide public-school students with tutoring and mentoring. On a weekly basis, university volunteers meet with kids ages 5–18 at local community centers, schools, and churches. By taking the students on a field trip, the tutors hope to inspire the students and to help them connect their schoolwork to real-world experiences. Partner organizations and volunteers can provide transportation to the science center for students, but they hope admission can also be cost-free for the students.
Join G-Team and donate $6 to help The Detroit Partnership give public-school students a hands-on exposure to science. If G-Team members raise $210, then The Detroit Partnership can send 35 students on a field trip to the Detroit Science Center. Each additional $6 raised will pay for another student's admission fee to the science center.
