In a Nutshell

Donations transport puppies to volunteer homes and later to the center where they complete training to guide human partners

The Fine Print

The Issue: Guide Dogs Trained to Lead Human Partners

Guide Dogs for the Blind nurtures puppies from birth as they learn to be guide dogs. From their first weeks spent playing with socializers, they age and work with a human partner, completing thousands of hours of training. Every year, more than 850 puppies travel to volunteer homes to begin training. From this group, an average of 350 graduate into guide dogs, which are paired with blind or visually impaired people to aid them in their daily lives.

The Campaign: Transporting Puppies to Be Trained

If 40 people donate $10 to this Grassroots campaign, then Guide Dogs for the Blind can transport two puppies to be trained as guide dogs. Puppy trucks deliver the dogs to volunteer puppy-raising families in nine western states and pick them up again—14 to 18 months later—when they are ready for formal training at Guide Dogs’ facility. Each additional $200 raised will provide transportation for another puppy.

Guide Dogs for the Blind

In 1942, many injured veterans returned to the West Coast from World War II. But in their pain lay inspiration—Lois Merrihew and Don Donaldson recognized the need to assist the hundreds of servicemen who would come back without sight and dreamed of starting a school to train guide dogs. Soon they rescued their first dog, a german shepherd named Blondie, from a local pound and paired her with Sergeant Leonard Foulk.

Since its inception, Guide Dogs for the Blind has graduated more than 10,000 human-dog teams. On an 11-acre campus, the organization's volunteers train labrador and golden retrievers to assist their companions in mobility and daily tasks. They aim to create teams based on collaboration and partnership, working to form a long-lasting, healthy bond. The dogs receive companionship in and out of the school, intensive training, and follow-up support, along with grooming and medical care from birth. On average only half of the dogs graduate from the program and become guides, but the other half go on to work for such organizations as Dogs for Diabetics and the California Highway Patrol, and some live with adoptive families.

The Groupon Guide to: Posting on Craigslist

Craigslist is an online message board where people can interact with their community without ever leaving the safety and smell bubble of their own home. Here are some tips for navigating through Craig's universe:

  • Sell your apartment by describing it as "cozy," "luxurious," and "absolutely not a devil box just full of devils."

  • Get the attention of a "missed connection" you saw on the bus by mentioning a book they were reading and then the more challenging book you were reading.

  • If you're looking for a new couch, start by skimming the section for "furniture" and end by skimming the section for "cooperative families who will let you sit on their backs couch-style."

  • If you're looking for a job, check out the "TV/film/video" category first. That's where Hollywood goes to find all of their new movie stars.

I see you like to read. Would you like me to suggest some thought-provoking tomes?
