Classes take place every Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and accommodate 8–20 students. Under the direction of a skilled staff, participants learn the basics of interpreting a wine’s multifaceted flavors. After a brief tour of the vineyard and winery, students are lead through a sensory analysis. The class may be done without sampling wine; this Groupon does not include wine, but eight tastings may be added during class for $9 per person. Participants select cheese-and-cracker pairings to cleanse palates between quaffs. Each student leaves with a gift bag full of wine-related goodies.<p>
Haak Vineyards & Winery
Since 1969, when Gladys Haak gave her husband Raymond two concord grapevines to celebrate their 10th anniversary, the couple's namesake vineyard has flourished into 1,800 vines sprawling across three acres. Galveston County's first and only winery transforms grapes into award-winning potions that have earned the attention of the Houston Press and the Dallas Observer. Whether sipped onsite or at various shops and restaurants, the wines grace glasses with a diverse mélange of local blends. Custom labels can be commissioned to personalize each bottle with heartfelt dedications or nutritional information written in iambic pentameter.
The vineyard welcomes thirsty visitors with tours of their verdant vines, 25,000-square-foot workshop, and deli stocked with Boar's Head meats and pungent cheese. Frequent guests reap the exclusive benefits of the winery’s club memberships, which include invitations to special events, first tastings, discounts, and complementary bottles. An event-ready banquet space also sets the scene for memorable weddings and events, with the winery’s chef, Mary Bass, overseeing catering duties, cake cuttings, and the busboys’ a capella performance of “Take My Breath Away."

“A very nice way to spend a couple of hours. The staff is very friendly and the winery a surprising little gem where one would least expect to find a winery (i.e. far from e.g. California, Italy, or France), and the wine quite good.”

“Check status of tours before you go. We were unable to tour due to a special meeting, but they more than made up for it with both signature glasses and a beautiful porch for sitting outside in full view of the vineyards. Bottling room was visible through a glass window and they were using a brand new screw cap machine on the bottling line. Not to mention the very friendly and knowledgeable staff. We has a lovely visit and will return in the future.”
