During Learn to Cook classes, the chef supplies his charges with the recipes and food necessary to tackle healthy meals. He lets pupils choose their own three-course menus, then spends two or three hours helping them craft the dishes from natural foods. Along the way, students learn new knife skills, how to approach grocery shopping, how the color of foods affects their nutritional value, and the criteria for superfoods. After cooking, customers eat the spoils of their labor with a bottle of provided wine. Classes are available within Napa, Sonoma, and Marin Counties.

Healthy Palate

Nutritional counselor Gary Appelsies wants his clients to succeed. That’s why he forgoes standard techniques of strict dieting and food deprivation in favor of designing personalized lifestyle plans for better health. He possesses knowledge of more than 100 dietary theories, has a quarter-century’s worth of experience as a natural-foods chef, and received the Health Leadership Award from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York City, one of his alma maters and an important player in the health industry. With this wealth of nutrition-oriented knowledge and experience at his disposal, Gary transforms unhealthy habits into helpful ones that clients can maintain long-term, or at least until their next hot-dog-eating championship.

He does so through variations of health coaching that may take the form of one-on-one sessions, family meetings, or in-home cooking classes. Gary focuses on more than just the physical effects of food; he directs attention to the emotional and mental power of certain eats and helps his clients better understand their cravings. To curb them and boost energy without prescribing intravenous shots of coffee, he overhauls diets with new foods and healthy, easy recipes.

The Groupon Guide to: New Roller Coasters

It's still early, but it looks like 2013 will go down in history as the year of the roller coaster. Here are some roller coasters that are debuting soon:

  • Kung Fu Panda: the Ride
  • Kung Fu Panda: a Roller Coaster
  • Kung Fu Panda: a Rock 'n' Roller Coaster (the Aerosmith roller coaster but all songs used for the ride were rerecorded by Aerosmith while they were wearing panda costumes)
  • Kung Fu Panda: the Panda Rides among Us (on This Roller Coaster)
  • Kung Fu Panda 3: the Ride Based on an Early Draft of an Unproduced Screenplay
  • Panda Drop (not based on Kung Fu Panda—riders are just dropped into a cage with a bunch of pandas)
  • Lung Flu Amanda: America's Most Contagious Roller Coaster

Which Oscar-winning films were based on roller-coaster rides? Find out in today's Groupon Guide.
