The Issue: Risk of Illness Following Natural Disasters

After a natural disaster, one of the biggest threats survivors face is the threat of disease. Poor sanitation in overcrowded shelters can cause hygiene-related health issues to run rampant. Basic hygiene products can help return a sense of normalcy and protect those who have recently suffered a catastrophe.

The Campaign: Distributing Hygiene Kits to Disaster Survivors

If 30 people donate $10 to this Grassroots campaign, then Heart to Heart International can distribute 30 hygiene-care kits to survivors of natural disasters. Each kit contains basic toiletry and first-aid items, including a hand towel, a washcloth, a wide-tooth comb, a bottle of shampoo, a toothbrush, a tube of toothpaste, a bar of soap, 10 bandages, and two 1-gallon zipper-seal bags to hold the kit together. Volunteers assemble the care kits to send to disaster survivors around the world. FedEx and the companies who produce the products underwrite the costs of shipping and supplying the hygiene kits. Each additional $10 raised will fund another care kit.

Heart to Heart International

Heart to Heart International began as the vision of Dr. Gary Morsch, who challenged his local Rotary club to donate medical supplies to hospitals in Moscow at the end of the Cold War. With local collections across the country and the aid of the U.S. government, they distributed aid to 15 area hospitals. Today, Heart to Heart International continues to improve health conditions all over the world by connecting individuals in need with medical resources. It mobilizes volunteers to provide medical education and aid, respond to international crises, and address community health concerns.
