Breakfast (7 a.m.–3 p.m.) and lunch (11 a.m.–3 p.m.) are served in the main restaurant, and include such dishes as biscuits and sausage gravy ($7), chicken-fried steak and eggs ($13), and the Juicy Lucy ($12) stuffed with American cheese.
Dinner is served in the Benbow Room or the adjacent dining room from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday–Thursday, and until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Biscuits submerged in sausage gravy, burgers oozing with molten cheese curds, double-bratwurst breakfasts—this hearty Midwestern food is what Wisconsinite Jay Wergin longed for when he proposed the idea for the Heartland Cafe to his business partner, Chef Jeff Loren. Together, they've crafted a menu populated by meals more comforting than Angela Lansbury reading the recipe for corned-beef hash as a bedtime story. Most items are made from scratch, including the beer mustard, the mac ‘n’ cheese, and even the sausage used to make the equally scratch-made gravy, which the Seattle Weekly called "excellent" and "rich."
For dinner, an alleyway entrance leads to the Benbow Room, a tavern awash with pirate-themed décor left over from the beloved Admiral Benbow Inn that originally inhabited the space. Above, dark-wood rafters recall the lower deck of a ship; below, koi fish swim in tanks built into the floor. On some nights, live music and comedy acts brighten the festive atmosphere even further.
