A hot pot of chili is a perfectly matched symbol for America, with the red of the cayenne pepper, the white of the soft bean insides, and the blue faces of obstinate diners who refuse to take another breath until they get seconds. Celebrate a spicy American tradition with today's Groupon: for $5, you get one adult admission to the 2nd Annual New York City Chili Cookoff (a $9 value) on April 16 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Historic Richmond Town in Staten Island.
This year's chili cook-off promises to please spice seekers with samples of award-winning chili while entertaining families with myriad outdoor activities amid the idyllic living-history village of Historic Richmond Town. In the main event, veteran sauce masters will battle for savory supremacy in four different categories, including traditional chili, chili verde, homemade salsa, and the egalitarian people's choice chili. Samplers can stroll the grounds and booths, tasting securely with the knowledge that all cook-off cage matches are the only local chili-based festivities conducted with the blessing of the International Chili Society, a shadowy guild that promises fair-goers the epitome of delicious, spicy stews.
In addition to the meaty madness, guests can embark on a bevy of non-hot-pot-related shenanigans, including a wing-eating contest, classic car show, and live music from local tunesmiths and word association champions, the Wahoo Skiffle Crazies. Kiddie rides and games are also available at an additional charge, and chili fiends ages 17 and under pay $5 for admission.

The Groupon Guide to: Cartoon Environmentalism
An entire generation was turned on to environmentalism by the Saturday morning cartoon show Planet Man, which featured the eponymous square-jawed, blue-and-green superhero fighting polluters and giving kids tips on how to save the planet. Here's a sampling of the advice he espoused:
- "Styrofoam is megabad for Mother Earth, so help her out by burning any styrofoam you come across."
- "Start a compost heap in the backyard, Earthskateers. Eggshells, coffee grounds, unopened food in the pantry: it all helps the plants grow."
- "Want to help the earth? Mail me your mom's jewelry!"
- "Don't just throw away the blood from that nosebleed. Use it to feed a small animal.”
- "Please stop summoning me to help clean your room. I’m on a date right now.”
