The Issue: Limitations to Eating a Balanced Diet

Families who are suffering from hunger face a variety of challenges when trying to create a balanced meal that incorporates fresh fruits and vegetables with only a limited budget and aid from food pantries. Fresh produce has risen in cost more than processed food in the past couple decades, decomposes more quickly, and often delivers fewer calories per dollar spent, according to a report from the Organic Consumers Association. Additionally, to cook fresh fruits and vegetables, families also need a myriad of other ingredients and equipment, including oil, salt and pepper, pots and pans, and cooking utensils, making fresh produce even more cost prohibitive.

The Campaign: Providing Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

If 30 people donate $9 to this Grassroots campaign, then Hopelink can fund one month's worth of fruits and vegetables for 30 local low-income families. Adding fresh produce such as apples, oranges, carrots, potatoes, and onions to a regular diet can help ensure individuals get the vitamins and nutrients they need to maintain their overall health. Easy access to fresh produce also allows families to focus on other challenges as they work to gain self-sufficiency. Each additional $9 raised will fund a month of fresh produce for another family.
