The Issue: Cuts to Education Budgets
In the face of possibly significant cuts to school budgets, state lawmakers were deeply divided over the solution to these problems, as reported by Inland Valley Daily Bulletin in 2012. But teachers and school-district officials agreed that, without adequate school funding, "children are being cheated out of their best chance for success." Area public schools educate many underserved youth who don't otherwise have exposure to certain fields, including environmental science and conservation, or access to hands-on learning opportunities such as field trips. Title I schools in particular serve large populations of children from low-income families that often can't afford such enriching activities.
The Campaign: Funding a Trip to a Water-Filtration Site
All donations to this Grassroots campaign will be used by Inland Empire Waterkeeper to send classes from Title I schools in the region on a field trip to a water-filtration plant. For every $300 raised, Inland Empire Waterkeeper can cover the cost of a field trip for one class, including transportation, materials, and the teacher.
As part of the RiverKATS (Kid Activism Together with Science) program, Inland Empire Waterkeeper helps provide hands-on learning opportunities for underserved students. Field trips to wetlands, conservation gardens, water-treatment facilities, and ecological reserves are tailored to students' interests and give them the chance to talk with passionate professionals.
Inland Empire Waterkeeper
Inland Empire Waterkeeper envisions the Upper Santa Ana River Watershed as a sustainable, pollution-free watershed backed by a community of motivated water stewards. To achieve this vision, the organization works to protect and enhance the watershed's quality through a variety of ways. Its programs include working with government agencies to ensure proactive policy; raising awareness through volunteer cleanup events; and educating students during hands-on field trips. Restoration and water-quality programs help achieve the more long-term goals of protecting inland waterways while tackling the complex process of restoring degraded waterways to healthy, functional ecosystems.
