The Issue: Psychological Effects of Cancer on Families
In 2013, nearly 600,000 Americans are expected to die from cancer, according to data from the American Cancer Society, many of whom will leave behind grieving children. When young parents suffer from life-threatening illnesses, it can put an indescribable strain on the entire family. Financial resources and stress levels both take a serious hit as the family fights the disease together. Traumatic periods such as these make it even more important for families to share fun experiences that create lasting memories for young children who will lose a parent. Taking a family trip together can even improve patients’ quality of life by reducing stress and emotional suffering.
The Campaign: Providing Getaways for Families with Cancer
All donations to this Grassroots campaign will be used by Jack & Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation to provide memorable experiences for families with a parent suffering from terminal cancer. Every $1,500 raised will provide a WOW! Experience – a four-day getaway – for one family. These experiences include transportation, plane tickets, hotel stays, activities, and meals. Families can travel to a variety of locales including the Caribbean, Colorado, and San Francisco, to help families bond and provide a temporary sense of normalcy.
Jack & Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation
After Jill Albert was diagnosed with terminal cancer, she and her husband Jon found that every free moment was consumed with the disease, and that they “needed a break” from it to spend time with their children. After Jill passed away, Jon wanted to help reduce the suffering for other families by helping them create lasting memories together at the end, he explained in an interview with the Today Show. He founded Jack & Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation (JAJF) to provide vacations for families with a parent suffering from terminal cancer.
JAJF’s WOW Experiences provide a timeout from cancer concerns, giving families opportunities to have fun together for a few days by traveling to destinations across the country including Hawaii, New York, Colorado, and Chicago. JAJF pays for every expense from traveling to and from the airport, plane tickets, activities, meals, and hotel stays. These experiences help reduce stress for patients and their families and create lasting memories that children can cherish once their parent has passed away. JAJF receives referrals directly from a network of 209 oncologists, who prescribe the experience as part of treatment for the family.
