Led by a certified guide, passengers steer an inflatable raft down a stretch of the Athabasca River. A 10-minute float acclimates them to their paddling gear before they head through four or five sections of grade-2 rapids. Trips are scheduled beginning May 1 and depart every Monday–Friday at 9 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3:30 p.m.
Guests do not need any prior rafting experience, and children younger than 12 regularly attend for $32. All supplies and equipment are provided, customers need only bring a bathing suit or shorts and a T-shirt.
Jasper's Whitewater Rafting
On the Athabasca River, it's often the elk that stand and watch as herds of humans move by, rushing over glacial waters. Jasper's Whitewater Rafting entertains the wildlife each summer by ferrying passengers down the river in eight-person inflatable rafts. These vessels can either drift serenely past panoramic views or tackle turbulent rapids, depending on the trip.
Each raft is piloted by a federally licensed guide with first-aid and river-rescue training. Whether leading groups through the Athabasca's Class II rapids—sections that require only basic paddle manoeuvring —or the more advanced Class III cascades of the Sunwapta, these experts ensure that the splashy thrills stay safe. They also adhere to a "no trace" policy, paying respect to the surrounding wilderness by leaving no signs of their passage and only giving air high-fives to jumping fish. Their eco-friendly approach to the terrain means that adventurers are more likely to see mule deer, bighorn sheep, and even predators such as wolves and grizzly bears. Back onshore, heated changing rooms and well-up-to-date, meticulously sanitized gear keep wilderness explorers feeling just civilized enough.
