During the first visit, the dental surgeon conducts a thorough exam and takes x-rays of mouths before placing the metal implant into the jaw. It takes approximately three months, and sometimes up to six, for the implant to fuse to the jawbone and completely heal. After the implant has healed, the doctor takes impressions for the crown and abutment and sends them to the lab for fabrication. Two weeks later, the doctor attaches the abutment to the implant and attaches the crown—the artificial tooth—over the abutment to fill in smile gaps.
