The Issue: Houseless Dogs with Special Needs

Between 2010 and 2011, the number of individuals experiencing homelessness in Hawaii grew 6.1%, according to a report from the state’s Department of Human Services. The pets of individuals experiencing homelessness or financial difficulties face the same daily challenges as their owners, including lack of shelter, food, and medical care.

The Campaign: Providing Orthopedic Beds for Dogs

If 30 people donate $10 to this Grassroots campaign, then K9 Kokua can purchase three orthopedic beds for geriatric or special-needs dogs with owners who are financially destitute or houseless. Orthopedic beds support each dog’s weight regardless of breed, are gentle on joints, and can help prevent further joint problems or the need for future surgeries and medications. Additional funds raised will be used to cover the costs of medical care for dogs in need.

K9 Kokua

K9 Kokua was formed when a group of dog lovers began feeding and helping care for Opu, a dog belonging to a houseless member of the community. Volunteers soon became aware of a growing need for basic pet care for animals belonging to the houseless population in Waianae and throughout Hawaii. Over time, the group has formed bonds with many more dogs and their owners, helping provide everything from pet food and flea shampoo to spay or neuter procedures and microchipping services. Along with giving these dogs emergency veterinary care and food, volunteers provide love and affection, helping the dogs maintain as normal a life as possible in their difficult circumstances.
