When Carrie Karki began her study of photography more than 20 years ago, her interest wasn't in grinning families. As a horticulturalist, she took many close-up pictures of plants and insects, capturing her beloved nature in great detail. These photos still form a notable portion of her portfolio, where she's captured the multicolored kernels of freshly picked corn, the channeled bark of an austere tree, the futility of a praying mantis trying to woo a hood ornament. She takes this eye for the sublime and her affection for the outdoors into her sessions with humans, setting them in pleasing lighting within outdoor scapes. An impish child may peer from between the bars of an iron fence, or a coursing river may become the backdrop for a family tableau.
