During the initial consultation, the doctor x-rays mouths to come up with a treatment plan. Next, a metal implant is installed into the jaw. After enough time has passed for the bone to fuse to the implant, usually up to six months, patients return to the office to have an abutment—a peg-like fixture—attached to the implant. The final visit occurs a few weeks later, where the doctor places a natural-looking crown over the abutment to render smiles whole.
