For years, mankind has heeded the siren call of the unexplored ocean, and silenced the eerily kazoo-like call of stagnant rain puddles with well-aimed boot stomps. Sign up for watery rendezvous with today's Groupon: for $299, you get an open-water diving certification course from LA Dive and Ride (a $599 value).

LA Dive and Ride's experienced instructors train aspiring aquanauts for a future full of subaquatic expeditions during PADI open-water diving certification courses. Students begin by attending interactive classroom sessions on dive theory, equipment, and safety, where mentors encourage discussion and helm role-play scenarios drawn from Poseidon’s own Dungeons and Dragons logbooks. Dives in confined pools then enable pupils to wet their flippers as they apply their classroom knowhow and learn to assemble their scuba gear. Finally, a trip to a local beach or open-water source plunks scholars into the deep blue, gauging their underwater etiquette before awarding a lifetime PADI certification card. Newly certified divers—whose PADI card grants them open-water access to most of the world's dive locations and backyard septic tanks—can keep their fingers on the ocean's pulse with LA Dive and Ride's updates on local and global scuba outings.

Though LA Dive and Ride provides boat tickets and most rental gear, apprentices must supply their own mask, fins, snorkel, gloves, hood, and boots, or purchase a student set at the base price of $225. Classes meet on weekends, and instructors can also tailor lesson times to accommodate busy schedules or happy hours in a sunken ship’s cocktail lounge.
