After a consultation with a CAT scan to determine eligibility, the dental surgeon installs a titanium implant into the jawbone. The implant is then allowed to fuse to the jawbone, which can take several months. Once the area has healed, the doctor attaches an abutment to the implant before placing a crown, which acts and functions like a natural tooth, on top of the abutment. The entire treatment can take about 4–8 months, and it requires several office visits. Some patients may need bone grafts done before the implant is put in, and these bone grafts will need to heal for 3–6 months. The entire procedure, like learning to parallel park, can take up to a year or longer to complete.
