In a single evening, professional photographer Laura Monahan teaches parents how to capture their children's most precious years with an information-packed three-hour class covering aspects of style, composition, clothing selection, and techniques such as natural lighting. Moms can snack on a selection of wines, chocolates, and cheeses as the class presents a collage of technical tricks and stylistic stratagems. Age-specific pointers teach parents how to photograph progeny from mewling newborns to peacefully napping 40-year-olds, and tips on multigenerational shooting teach lens lookers how best to capture young and old together. Cameras are not required for the workshop.

Workshops take place from 7 to 10 p.m. on select dates at the DoubleTree by Hilton Alana Waikiki Hotel. Though the class does not include intensive DSLR training, help determining correct aperture, ISO, and shutter-speed settings will be available.

Laura Monahan comes from an artistic family, and spent her youth practicing sculpture, oil painting, pottery, and what turned out to be her ultimate passion: photography. Her ability to preserve candid moments has left an indelible impression—she has a published portfolio on three continents and product lines appearing at national retailers such as Hallmark and JCPenney. Laura’s photo shoots always take place outdoors, capturing newborns, older kids, families, and makeshift popsicle-stick families in soft, natural lighting and poses that never appear unnatural. Her settings span the country from San Diego’s foamy beaches to Denver’s red-rock sunsets and into the Midwest’s autumn leaves.
