Ear Candling: A Light in a Wax-Filled Void
Learn about the contemporary practice of an ancient Egyptian tradition with Groupon’s overview of ear candling.
As a remedy for the annoyance of earwax buildup, practitioners of alternative medicine and holistic healing have performed ear candling—the act of clearing out the ear cavity via a vacuum of warm air—for thousands of years. They start by inserting a small, hollow candle, usually made of unbleached cotton that has been dipped in purified paraffin or beeswax, into the ear. Once the candle is lit, the flame’s warm air pushes the colder, existing air through the inside of the candle, creating a vacuum effect. Wax, fungus, yeast, and other debris are drawn upward until the airflow becomes disrupted and the practitioner has to tap out the candle’s contents. The ancient practice is still a popular treatment at spas, since the process can be soothing to the patient, who hears a gentle hum similar to that of a seashell pressed to the ear. Three candles typically do the job, and experts recommend that patients protect their ears from the cold or gossip for the next 24 hours, until the normal production of wax recurs to protect the ear.
To the ancient Egyptians, candling served more purposes than just clearing physical blockages. The process, they believed, also opened the body’s spirit center for a cleansing of the soul. Contemporary practitioners also believe the treatment can do more than remove wax buildup. Though today its efficacy has been challenged by some health organizations, some experts insist that with the permission of a health practitioner, candling can be a quick remedy for sinus and lymph-system ailments. They do not, however, believe that candling can take the place of a medical treatment for more serious issue. Since the ear is a sensitive area, health organizations agree it’s best to leave candling to the professionals.
