Before the 1904 World’s Fair, ice cream was served atop more ice cream, which led to constantly sticky fingers and a wave of sidewalk accidents. Marvel at technological advances with today’s Groupon: for $7, you get $15 worth of sandwiches and sundaes at Leatherby’s Family Creamery, with locations in Sacramento and Citrus Heights. This Groupon will also be valid at a third location in Elk Grove, set to open soon.

The staff at Leatherby’s Family Creamery slings a menu of decadent treats, savory sandwiches, and burgers. Patrons can snack on the corned beef, sauerkraut, mustard, and swiss cheese inside the seared Reuben sandwich ($7.79) to silence hunger or subtly suggest future baby names. Diners can dive into a hot crab-salad sandwich ($12.39) or conjure memories of homespun comforts with a grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwich ($4.79) followed by a soothing root-beer float ($4.99). Perfect for alerting passing planes, old-timey sundaes ($4.95–$7.95) glisten intently when drizzled with toppings that include caramel, hot fudge, or fruit. Since Leatherby’s crafts its creams by hand, diners can be sure the decadent creations come from the in-house creamery and not from wild ice cows.

Leatherby’s Family Creamery

Every day since “Daddy Dave” Leatherby Sr. and his wife, Sally, opened the first Leatherby’s Family Creamery 30 years ago, the shop has been churning out fresh ice cream layered in sweet sauces straight from the candy kettle. Milk, cream, and sugar form the base of Leatherby’s more than 30 flavors, which range from staples such as chocolate and strawberry to more exotic varieties including mocha almond fudge and spumoni. Inspired by family recipes that date back a half-century, these frosty treats come in cones, shakes, malts, and sodas, as well as in heaping sundaes and banana splits, the largest of which tips the scales at 54 ounces. Leatherby’s menu has expanded over time, and includes savory options such as sandwiches, burgers, soups, and salads.
