Let’s Fix It Workshops

When Teddy and Lisa Lett bought a Groupon for cooking classes , they had a blast during the hands-on lessons and kept coming back. One of the cooking-class staffers ended up calling Teddy, an electrician for over 30 years, to fix something for her. When he finished and showed her the simple fix he used, she told him he should find a way to share his repair skills with other people. That got Teddy and Lisa thinking: What if they combined the fun, hands-on elements of the cooking classes they loved with Teddy's handyman know-how?

They quickly fell in love with the idea. Through their workshop topics—which run the gamut from how to use power tools to Potty Talk: Plumbing 102—Teddy empowers homeowners with the skills they need to change a switch to a dimmer or swap out an air filter. The hands-on classes get students trying out skills for themselves, whether they're cutting out a sheetrock patch to fix a small wall or practicing installing a faucet. Their Home Sweet Home: Basic Home Maintenance class targets first-time homeowners, who Lisa says often don't know everything they need to do to keep their house in good shape, from cleaning the gutters and swabbing the deck to telling the old homeowners to leave. "The simple maintenance things that you do now can prevent major damage down the line," she says.

The excitement on their students' faces as they learn new skills thrills Teddy and Lisa and tells them they're on the right track. "This really is our baby together," Lisa says. "We dream about it."
