Questions and Answers

I have the same question as Nicole K. Also, how long is the Groupon good for? Can I use it in May 2010 for example? I did not notice an expiration date anywhere. Thanks!

OK, I see it expires in one year. Duh. But I am curious about extractions.

From the website:
“…will receive a meticulous analysis of his skin before the relaxing massage of face, neck and shoulders. This is followed by a steaming, gentle extractions to remove excess dirt and oil, and two customized masks.”
I have gotten facials here for the last two years—-they always do extractions after steaming face for about 10 minutes.
I am curious if others have enjoyed their experience here..went onto yelp and the reviews are very poor… http://www.yelp.com/biz/lia-schorr-skin-care-inc-new-york
@Lillian: Thanks for posting the Yelp link. Very helpful.
It’s worth noting that both of the Citysearch reviewers quoted on the ad (reeno and NYChautestuff) have no other reviews. Who joins a review site only to post one glowing review?
good point, sounds a bit dirty and chaotic. not how l like my facials.
if you look at these comments on yelp everyone says the same thing “poor atmosphere but amazing facials” i am an avid NYC spa goer and have purchased many groupons, and i am purchasing this one, wearing a tank and bringing my ipod, for people with clogged pores this sounds like a great deal!
I went through a bunch of the 5 starred reviews on Citysearch and a lot of them seem to be the work of one person: Glowing reviews of the spa, only 1 review per “user”, similar non-descript user pictures like blades of grass or sunset or bubbles.
That said, I may just pick one up anyway. Seems like much of the negative reviews on Yelp were about the owner’s demeanor. Really, all I’m interested in is a decent facial with good extraction — don’t care about the massage services, the decor, the round-robin, the owner — and even the poor reviews at Yelp seem to agree that this place is at least decent – good at facials. For $45, why not?

look here for more reviews- spa got 4 stars
You have a point Yvonne, but I guess I just don’t see a facial as a necessity – and if I’m not going to be treated well for the privilege of paying $45 for a service, then why bother?
I had a facial there one time for Spa Week and the spa technician I had was good. Noticed a difference right away.
Lauren, yes, I suppose if you don’t need the service, any money spent is frivolously so. I, however, am in desperate need of a facial. I might not have opted for this particular place without this groupon but since $45 is a pretty good deal and the reviews for the actual efficacy of the facials are decent, I’m gonna take the risk.
Ditto to Mei-Ling. I went for Spa week and had a great facial…it’s not a sprawling spa, but I felt relaxed while I was there.
286 Reviews on google and they have a four star. I’m going.
Lia Schorr has been around for a long time. That in itself says something. I never went there before, but for $45 I’m certainly willing to give her a try.
I went originally for spaweek and ended up buying a package. Its really a no frills place but the facials ARE really good. I definitely think its clean and for what you get, $45 is an amazing deal (my package discounts them to $75 or so each)
Why isn’t anyone from the spa commenting and answering questions?

Hi Susan B,
We have been monitoring the boards all day – it looks like everyone has been answering questions based on experiences, opinions and 3rd party reviews. If there is a specific question you have or want an answer from the Lia Schorr spa direct please let me know.
Thanks very much,
Michael

I think the NY Magazine Review says it all. http://nymag.com/listings/beauty/lia_schorr_spa/
Basically…not the greatest space/atmosphere if that’s what you’re looking for, but a great facial. For $45 in the city…that’s really more than you can ask for I think!

Doesn’t have good reviews on Yelp. I’d rather do a $30 Chinatown facial (my friend bought a package) for that rate. I hate getting prodded to buy more stuff and then be criticized on how much I leave as a tip.
Hi – I’m new at this and am a little concerned about the expiration date? 1600 have already sold and there are still two days left…plus of course they have other customers as well… I’d like to try this but is it going to be impossible to get an appointment? Just wondering if anyone has tried these types of groupons before and if it has been easy to actually schedule the service?
Do I need to tell them about my Groupon when I make the appointment, or just show it when paying?
I already booked my appointment for next Saturday. She even had a few appointments early tomorrow. With some planning I think it should not be a problem to book.

Hi Alison,
Please have your Groupon ID from your voucher when you book your appointment.
Thanks, Michael, Groupon Staff

A Message from Lia Schorr:
Please note: The Spa is closed on Sunday so please do not call to schedule appointments on Sunday. Call on Monday after 10am.
Thank you!
Michael/Groupon Staff
I already booked my appointment and they didn’t ask for my voucher. Should I call back?

Hi Gillian,
Please bring your Groupon to the appointment but you do not need to call back.
Enjoy, Michael
Hi Michael,
Can you reconfirm they do extractions?
Thanks!
All the reviews I saw on city search were positive about how great their facials are. I saw a random negative comment but it seemed like what they were ragging about was irrelevelant and had nothing to do with their service. Seemed like it may have come from a competitor or something. I mean $45 for a facial in the city especially is a great price and worth giving it a shot in my opinion.
And yes Carla they do extractions =)
If I buy this as a gift for a friend and she already bought one, will she be able to use both of them?
I’m trying to find the expiration date on it. So my question is, if I buy it for my wife today can she use it when ever?
OMG! It expires in 1 year! People keep answering this question but for some reason people keep asking it. My question is what’s the best time and day of the week to come so that you don’t get crappy service? And also since Lia gives people a hard time about leaving tips what’s the suggested tip amount?

Hi Candace – For facial’s the recommended tip is between 15-20% on the normal amount – in this case $95.
I know Lia wants all of the Groupon customers to feel welcomed. When you reserve your facial maybe you can ask when are some of the slower times at the Spa (Monday-Wednesday is typical). Thanks and enjoy Candace.

Lia Schorr will also offer any Groupon customers who purchase a facial 20% off on a follow-up waxing service. So enjoy your facial and we hope you come back for more treatments at Lia Schorr!
Thanks very much,
Michael/Groupon Staff
I’ve had treatments at Lia Schorr before and have been very pleased with their services.
I asked this question a day ago but it hasn’t been answered yet:
If I buy this as a gift for a friend and she already bought one (for herself), will she be able to use both of them?
I haven’t received any word after buying this groupon… how can I redeem it? I think I was supposed to receive an email when it went thru?
With so many purchased, is the spa able to fulfill appointments within a reasonable time frame?
Tamar,
Once you’re logged in with your username and password go to “my stuff” on the top right corner of the screen, from there you can go to “my groupons” and you should be able to view and print your groupons. If not you gotta contact groupon for help.

I went to my facial appointment this week and must tell fellow Grouponers that this by far was the worst experience I’ve ever had at a spa. Not only was it more than apparent that my technician was working on multiple clients at one time but she perhaps spent 25min with me max out of the 75 minutes. I could look past the dated and slightly shabby location if I had received the facial as it was described. My two friends who were with me agreed. Paid $45 – Worth $10 at best …
May I cancel my deal ?
I went to Lia Schorr and had facial with Eugenia. It was quite good and my skin looks very nice a great deal in NYC for $45.00.I usually have a facial one a month did find my treatment room small but t was still a good experience and my facilist provided me with some great expert tips without giving a hard sell.I recieved what the groupon had promised a deep cleaning facial with excellent products.I I even wanted to purchase the skin serum..This it is not a SPA but does provide very good facial treatments

IF YOU THINK THAT BEING AROUND A LONG TIME MEANS A GREAT FACIAL, THINK AGAIN!! I HAD FACIAL THERE THE OTHER DAY VERY DISSAPOINTED. THE TECHNICIAN RUSHED ME THROUGH IT, HARDLY EXTRACTING OR CLEANING, WHILE LIA SHORR TRIED SELLING ME OTHER SKINCARE PACKAGES! ANYWAY I THINK GROUPON IS GREAT AND THEY CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS!! VERY HAPPY WITH GROUPON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with Julie S. I got 2 groupons- one for me and one for my boyfriend’s birthday. We both went at 4pm this past Saturday. He was taken in 15 minutes before me, and he was there 15 minutes longer than I was! I did NOT get the 75 minutes that were promised. I was only in the room for about 50 minutes, and the facialist was only in the room for 15 minutes of those 50 minutes. She rushed through, told me how dry and flaky my skin is (it’s not), and left me with painful red irritation where she did the extractions which lasted days (when I do it myself it only stays red for 5 minutes). NEVER EVER GOING BACK. I want my money back- I’m so upset I bought two. And I’m never going to get my boyfriend to go to a spa with me again- this ruined it for him, which is really upsetting!

I got a Groupon for myself, too, and I wasn’t very happy about it. It is definitely not a 75 minutes facial and they are doing everything in a hurry. Lia Shorr books people in the same time, so an esthetician will take care of 3-4 appointments in the same time. Obviously there is a lot of pressure on them and she will only be with you for 15 minutes or so. My esthetician applied everything in a hurry and she hardly spent any time doing it right. In the end I had stuff in my hair, on my neck, and to cover the redness she applied lots of foundation that didn’t match my skin tone. She told me a few times how bad my skin looks like and honestly it is not, she was selling me more appointment and products. When I was about to enter the elevator, Lia herself asked me loudly in front of other customers if I left her “girl” something. Of course, how unprofessional is that?
I bought 2 facials (one for myself and one for my husband’s first facial). For starters, Lia Schorr was VERY rude when making the appointment over the phone. Once I mentioned Groupon she barked “We don’t have any availability on Saturdays for weeks.” No biggie…I asked her when the first available Saturday appointments were and told her I would take those…not in a hurry. She was much nicer when we showed up for our 9am appointments, but once again it felt like a Groupon factory. I already had a bad feeling about this. The treatment room was dirty, and I knew that what I was in for was not going to be a “spa experience.” My esthetician was very nice, and I have no direct complaints about her general services, but she must have been taking a bit longer than they allowed for the shoulder massage portion (my favorite part) because Lia barged into the treatment room and barked something at her in her native language (Hebrew?), and the woman scurried out a few minutes later (way to aid in my relaxation Lia). They must have had everything timed perfectly, because I could hear the estheticians slamming doors and stomping down the hallways in unison after applying the mask and leaving the room etc… When my esthetician came back into the room she would just barge right in and slam the door (no light tap or speaking in a soft tone). Very un-relaxing and tense experience. When I was checking out and leaving a tip for the girls, Lia slapped me with a service tax. While it wasn’t a huge amount ($2 per treatment), I was under the impression that the “service” (taxes and all) were paid for through Groupon, and all that was left to take care of was the tip (20% of the total amount…so $20 for each girl). After pointing this out to Lia….she took the tax out of the girls tips. She then proceeded to try to sell me a package of discounted facials. You’ve got to be kidding me!!! TERRIBLE experience, even for a no frills facial. I would NEVER go back. Between the slamming doors, stomping around the halls, and unprofessional barging in and yelling at the technician it is a small miracle this woman stays in business.

It is true, Alison H., they did not speak in English in front of me either. It is awkward, unprofessional and it makes people feel uncomfortable.
Is there any way we can get our money back from this deal? All I’ve read are negative reviews, both here and on Yelp and Citysearch since the Groupon was offered. It sounds like they might have been ok before, but now that Groupon buyers are coming in, they’re offering horrible service. I’m afraid to redeem it and sad I spent the money!

I kinda afraid to go get facial after all bad reviews… Anybody got their money back from groupon? Thanks!
They were so rude when I called to make an appointment (a month in advance and on a weekday), I haven’t even attempted to use this Groupon. Is there any Groupon stipulation for businennes that are getting consistently poor reviews?
I did end up selling mine on Lifesta dot com! Never heard from anyone at Groupon… All my other Groupon experiences have been wonderful, but this one has seemed to suck for almost everyone that’s bought it.
This is my first post. I wanted to share w/other Grouponers my positive facial experience @Lia Schorr yesterday. The deal is as advertised. No problem ranging from making/confirming appointment to the person providing the treatment itself. The owner who introduced herself was pleasant enough & a true business professional w/an interesting background. The quality of the facial w/extractions was good. As some some folks mentioned in previous posts, the ambiance could have been better & yes, the treatment room was not large. Overall, the conditions were fine. The $45 price tag was a definite plus. Lastly, although my preference is still the popular day salon & spa in Bay Ridge (a place I have been going to for 20+ years), I must admit that for a good facial & the convenience of a midtown location, its tough to beat.
My girlfriend actually told me to buy the Groupon because her mother has been going for a long time. I went to get my facial 2 weeks ago and was very pleased with the service. Yes the owner Lia asked me if I wanted to buy a package of 4 facials for a great deal afterwards but I did not consider it out of line. She strikes me as being very direct which I guess can turn some people off. There happened to be two other Grouponers there the same day and both seemed happy with the service. The facial was not the full 75 minutes but I feel it was one of the best facials I have ever had and reading about the history of Lia she certainly is a proficient for an excellent facial. The entrance of the spa is very nice and I really had no problem with the conditions.

Do you do extractions with this facial? And will we see results after one time?
