The 90-minute paddleboard lesson sends up to 12 students into the water, where they get to try 12 different boards in order to find the best fit. Groups learn to balance, turn, and drag race salmon while using five kinds of paddles. MACkite provides all equipment for the lesson, including life vests, boards, paddles, and leashes. The kiteboarding lesson teaches the fundamental techniques of power-kite flying. Taking place on dry land, the course covers rigging, line management, flying techniques, and safety.

On the edge of Lake Michigan, three generations of family members wade out into the water for a paddleboard class. Some seem apprehensive, unsure of how the lesson will unfold, but the mood changes once Susan, the groups' 70-year-old matriarch, stands atop her board and dips her paddle into the water. Encouraged by her bravery, the rest of the boarders stand upright and step out of their comfort zones.

Real experiences like these set the tone for MACkite's classes, which cover kiteboarding, snow kiting, surfing, and standup paddleboarding. Instructors put nervous students at ease, helping them face fears of falling off a board or accidentally pulling the lake’s plug. The experts can also add inventive twists to lessons, such as leading yoga poses on top of paddleboards.

Additionally, MACkite's crew hangs up their wetsuits and waterproof cummerbunds to man the business’s retail shop. Known to sport silly garb such as pink board shorts and fake mustaches, they help visitors peruse Naish equipment as well as one of the largest selections of Cabrinha gear in the Western hemisphere. Their extensive stock boasts individual items such as wetsuits and complete packages.

The Groupon Guide to: Animal Defense Mechanisms

In the wild, animals must protect themselves so they can survive long enough to one day willingly supply humans with their nutritious bodies. Here's how some creatures manage to stay alive:

Pig: Emits a strong, unpleasant odor that smells like burned bacon that was also maybe dropped on the floor once or twice

Cow: Skin becomes translucent in order to display the animal's delicious-looking insides and lure its attacker closer. Once the attacker is near, the cow hopes it will realize how pitiful and defenseless cows really are and then just leave it alone.

Chicken: Throws up a bunch

Dogs: Spend years—years—pretending they give a single guff what you have to say

Hamster: Balls itself up to look like a disgusting, hairy corn dog

Why are chickens always throwing up? Find out in today's Groupon Guide.
