Marc Hauser Photography

"I do anything to get a good picture," Marc Hauser told the Chicago Reader in 1987. "I talk, I scream, I jump up and down." That was the year Hauser turned 35, by which time he had shot ad campaigns for Rolling Stone and portraits of television and film stars. The Wilmette native inherited a love of photography via his father's camera-shaped chromosomes, but his spirited approach is unique. As a 13-year-old freshman at New Trier High School, he chose to thrust his boyhood hobby into adulthood via an apprenticeship with Playboy contributing photographer Stan Malinowski. Portraiture endures as his favorite form, infusing his commercial work and earning him more than 100 awards, including Clios for advertising and a Grammy.

Hauser reveals his sitter's inner life by combining the simplicity and elegance of classical composition with the crisp, declarative boldness of advertisements rendered in potato chips. Clients dress up to develop their own narrative, and he hands them props from his collection or their homes, such as loaves of bread or finger puppets, to reflect their story or loosen them up in front of his lens.
