The McHenry Outdoor Theater turns back the clock with two classic movies screened back-to-back every Friday and Saturday from August 17 through September 29. On September 1 and 2, Grease and Saturday Night Fever bring audiences back to the heady high-school days of the mid-20th century, when life was a juggling act of homework and studying for the mandatory dance-number portion of the SATs. Two of history's greatest thrill-makers get their due as Spielberg's E.T. and Jurassic Park share a screen (September 7 and 8), followed by Hitchcock's Psycho and The Birds (September 14 and 15). The final weekend of the Throwback series takes a walk on the alt-comedy side, featuring The Big Lebowski and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (September 28 and 29).

McHenry Outdoor Theater

New releases get an old-fashioned treatment at McHenry Outdoor Theater, a 1950s-style drive-in screening two back-to-back movies every night. With a special focus on family films, the starlit screen shines across comforts including a concession stand vending burgers, brats, pizza, and hot dogs, and a dog-friendly policy to ensure everyone has someone cuddly to grab during the scary parts. While the story unfolds on screen, the theater pumps the sound through complimentary radios, and approximately half the viewing spots are equipped with vintage speakers that complete the timeless slice of Americana. Besides new releases, which are regularly updated every two weeks, the theater might show anything from golden oldies to alternative comedies to classic blockbusters.

Though McHenry Outdoor Theater sometimes features a discounted price online, this Groupon still offers the best deal available.

The Groupon Guide to: Barrels of Animals

History’s greatest poets and philosophers have all relied on one infallible metric in the construction of their most enduring metaphors—comparing things to barrels of different animals. Penetrate their heady linguistic flourishes with this clear-cut guide to animal-barrel metaphors.

  • Barrel of: Monkeys
  • Symbolizes: Imminent, inescapable fun
  • Use it in a sentence: “The new hit movie Scream 4 is more fun—and scarier—than a barrel of monkeys!”

  • Barrel of: Fish

  • Symbolizes: How easy it would be to accomplish a given task, in comparison to cornering fish in an enclosed space and hunting them with a gun
  • Use it in a sentence: “Chucking shurikens into this oil drum full of lobsters will be slightly harder than shooting fish in a barrel!”

  • Barrel of: One man

  • Symbolizes: A whimsical look at Depression-era poverty
  • Use it in a sentence: “There’s nothing metaphorical about the crisis of poverty.”

What is literally as fun as a barrel of monkeys?
