The Issue: Food Insecurity Among the Elderly
The inability to leave the house due to age or physical impairment, combined with a low income, can make maintaining a nutritious diet a struggle. Each day, Meals on Wheels and More delivers an average of 4,000 meals to elderly homebound individuals in Austin and Travis County, and demand continues to grow.
The Campaign: Delivering Meals to Homebound Individuals
If 40 people donate $15 to this Grassroots campaign, then Meals on Wheels and More can provide 48 homebound individuals with one week’s worth of nutritious meals. Each additional $600 raised will provide another week’s worth of meals to 48 people. During the week, volunteers from Meals on Wheels and More hand-deliver one hot meal per day to individuals enrolled in the program who are elderly, physically impaired, or otherwise homebound. Clients also can opt to receive supplemental frozen meals for the weekend. A case manager assigned to each client provides home visits, takes phone calls, and ensures that basic living needs are being met.
