The Issue: Food Insecurity Among the Elderly

Many older adults are enjoying longer, healthful lives independently in their own homes. But according to research by the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, "growing older generally increases nutritional risk." Health disparities, cognitive challenges, physical impairments, and low incomes can make maintaining a nutritious diet a struggle. Yet the Journal of the American Dietetic Association also points out that home-delivered meals help increase the daily intakes of key nutrients for these individuals.

The Campaign: Delivering Meals to Homebound Individuals

All donations to this Grassroots campaign will be used by Meals On Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County to deliver healthful meals to elderly or otherwise homebound individuals. The first $300 of donations will be matched by an anonymous donor, enabling Meals on Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County to deliver meals to 10 individuals for two weeks. For every additional $600 raised, Meals on Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County can deliver two weeks' worth of meals to 10 more individuals.

Meals On Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County supplies one lunch meal to each each person on their route five days per week. Each day, clients can choose one of two entrees and one of four beverages. Volunteers deliver those, along with companionship and an informal check-ins to ensure that each homebound individual is healthy.

When homebound, people can feel cut off from the world outside their door. Company may be scarce, and trips to the grocery store or market may be impossible. But Meals On Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County aims to improve the lives of homebound individuals and other people in need through programs that help promote independent living with dignity. Its volunteers provide hot, nutritious meals as well as grocery-shopping services, home repairs, and friendly visits and phone calls. And the organization dives deep into the health of the people it serves. Each of its 4,000-plus clients receives an in-home assessment and quarterly follow-up sessions, and clients can even request private nutritional counseling from a licensed dietitian. What results? In 2012, 91% of Meals On Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County's clients said the organization's services helped improved their overall quality of life, and 57% believe that they "would not be able to remain living in their own home" without its services.
